Sterling Silver (S925) Jewelry
Sterling Silver consists of 92.5% pure silver (hence S925) and 7.5% of other metals such as copper. As silver is a soft metal, other metals are typically added to increase its hardness and strength so as to ensure durability. While silver isn’t as rare as gold or platinum, it is still a precious metal.
Sterling silver is beautiful but delicate as it is prone to bending and snagging. It may tarnish over time due to moisture and chemicals in the air, such as sulphur, as well as from contact with other harsh chemicals usually found in perfumes and lotions. Nonetheless, silver jewelry pieces can last for decades if well taken care of. It is important to clean it and store it properly when not being worn.
Cleaning Silver Jewelry
- To keep your sterling silver jewelry shiny, wear it regularly (the oils found in your skin actually delay the oxidation of silver!) or store it in the provided pouch from your order. Polish any tarnish with a silver cloth to restore its shine.
- Using a silver cloth regularly removes light tarnish and helps prevent re-tarnishing, preserving the sparkle of your silver.
- Because silver is soft, remove jewelry while cleaning or when doing activities where it may potentially hit hard surfaces. Avoid exposure to chlorine and salt by removing jewelry before swimming or showering. Always take off necklaces before sleeping and avoid storing them in humid places like the bathroom.
Anti-Tarnish Tip
If you don’t have a jewelry box, store your silver jewelry in the box or pouch it came with. Alternatively, storing it in a box with silica gel packs or desiccants will absorb moisture and help prevent tarnish.
